For nearly four decades, manufacturer W.L. Gore & Associates, Inc. used toxic poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), also known as “forever chemicals,” at its Cherry Hill Plant in Elkton, Md. When prompted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 2006, Gore agreed to phase out the use of certain PFAS chemicals by the end of 2015. As recently as Feb. 2, 2022, however, Gore was on record opposing legislative efforts to place restrictions on PFAS in Maryland, arguing the current definition of PFAS chemicals is overly broad and shouldn’t include PTFE.
People who live and work near Gore’s Cherry Hill Plant allege the company contaminated their groundwater, surface water and soil when it dumped chemical wastewater and released large plumes of PFAS vapors in the air. They allege that as a result, the surrounding community has been and continues to be exposed to toxic chemicals that persist in the environment and increase the risk of harm to health.
Our team of attorneys from Motley Rice LLC and Baird Mandalas Brockstedt & Federico LLC filed a putative class action on Feb. 1, 2023 for residents, business owners, and others affected by the PFAS contamination near the Cherry Hill Plant.
